Coverage for property that moves
Despite the name, inland marine has nothing to do with boats. It covers business property that travels or sits away from your address: tools and equipment moving between job sites, goods in transit, mobile machinery, and materials waiting to be installed. Your commercial property policy largely stops at your front door - inland marine covers the rest of the trip.
Who needs it
Contractors hauling tools and equipment, businesses shipping or receiving goods, medical and photography gear that travels, food trucks and mobile operations, and anyone renting or leasing equipment. If a theft from a truck overnight would hurt, this is the policy that answers.
The pieces worth naming
Contractor's equipment schedules cover owned and rented tools. Installation floaters cover materials from delivery until the job is accepted - the window where a commercial property policy usually will not respond.
